WhatsApp Expands Beyond the Phone With Native iPad Accounts, CarPlay/Android Auto and PDF Editing

Meta is rolling the update out gradually to give users tablet independence, inline PDF review on Web/Desktop, revamped in‑car voice controls, plus music sharing to Status.

Overview

  • WhatsApp began a phased rollout this week that lets users register and use the app directly on iPad without linking the tablet to a smartphone, though account setup still requires a phone number and SMS confirmation.
  • The company redesigned its Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces to let drivers hear messages, reply by voice, start and receive WhatsApp calls, and access call lists and favorite contacts via the vehicle display.
  • WhatsApp Web and Desktop can now open PDFs inline inside chats and — through an Adobe Acrobat integration — offer basic edits such as highlighting and annotations, while mobile support for the PDF tools is not yet available.
  • Users can share currently playing songs from Apple Music and Spotify directly into their WhatsApp Status, extending simple media sharing across platforms.
  • Meta cautions features will appear gradually and vary by device and region, so some people will see the new car, iPad, PDF or Status capabilities before others as the company completes the rollout.
