Overview
- WhatsApp announced the multi-feature update on Wednesday and has begun a gradual global rollout of iPad sign-up, refreshed CarPlay and Android Auto, in-chat PDF tools and music sharing to Status.
- iPad users can now register and run WhatsApp as a standalone account from the tablet, but WhatsApp requires a phone number and a one-time passcode to complete setup.
- The CarPlay and Android Auto refresh lets drivers hear and reply to messages, place and receive WhatsApp calls, view recent call history, and access favorite contacts using the vehicle’s screen and voice controls.
- Web and desktop WhatsApp add Adobe Acrobat integration so PDFs open inside chats and can be highlighted or annotated without downloading, and WhatsApp says shared documents remain protected under its encryption model.
- The change continues WhatsApp’s move away from a phone‑tethered model that began with its 2025 iPad app and recent features like usernames and a paid Plus tier, and it could shift how people use the service across tablets, cars and computers as the rollout reaches different regions and devices.
