WhatsApp Adds In-Call Mic Mode Shortcut on iPhone

The app opens Apple’s system Mic Mode menu during calls so users can pick Automatic, Standard, Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum without leaving WhatsApp.

Overview

  • WhatsApp began rolling out an in-call “mic mode” control in mid-July via the App Store update WhatsApp for iOS 26.27.74, and the option is appearing for some accounts as the rollout continues.
  • Users find the setting on the call screen by tapping the More button, selecting Mic Mode, and then choosing a system option that iOS applies immediately without leaving or ending the call.
  • The shortcut exposes Apple’s four system modes — Automatic, Standard, Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum — and the chosen mode persists for the WhatsApp app until the user changes it.
  • This iOS shortcut relies on Apple’s system-level audio processing rather than WhatsApp doing its own processing, which contrasts with WhatsApp’s separate noise-cancellation feature that it built into Android.
  • Availability depends on the WhatsApp app version, the iPhone model and iOS version because Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum require iOS 15 or later on iPhone XR/XS and newer and Automatic requires iOS 18, and WhatsApp has not announced a date for full rollout.
