Overview
- Western Railway begins operating the 16 upgraded services today, converting selected 12-car locals to 15-car formations on the Mumbai suburban network.
- The change lifts the total count of 15-car services to 227 from 211, while overall suburban services remain 1,414.
- Eight of the upgraded runs fall in peak periods—four in the morning rush and four in the evening—to target the busiest windows.
- Routes in the annexed list include Churchgate–Virar, Nallasopara–Churchgate and Borivali–Churchgate, and commuters have been asked to check updated timetables for any minor adjustments.
- Railway officials say the longer trains increase per-service capacity by nearly 20% and form part of a broader program that includes new rakes and platform extensions.
