Western Disturbance Batters North India With Rain, Gusty Winds and IMD Alerts

Forecasters expect a March 20 peak that will delay a swift onset of summer across the north.

Overview

  • Delhi-NCR saw a sudden evening storm on March 18 with gusts up to 68 km/h, at least 22 flight diversions, hundreds of delays and a sharp temperature drop from about 29°C to 19°C within an hour.
  • IMD and the Regional Meteorological Centre kept yellow to orange alerts in place for March 19–20, warning of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–60 km/h across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and western UP.
  • Temperatures are set to run below normal, with Delhi’s maximum expected near 28–30°C on Thursday and around 26–28°C by Friday after early-March heat eased.
  • IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the current system may linger into March 21 and that additional western disturbances are likely around March 23 and March 27, keeping heatwaves at bay.
  • Experts described the setup as unusually linear and conducive to strong thunderstorms, while higher Himalayas reported heavy snowfall and hilly states faced isolated hail risk.
