West Bengal’s Interim Budget Hikes Lakshmir Bhandar, Announces Youth Stipend Ahead of Polls

The pre-poll vote-on-account lifts women’s payouts with a new youth stipend, heightening centre–state budget tensions.

Overview

  • - The state tabled a Rs 4.06 lakh crore vote-on-account, raising Lakshmir Bhandar by Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 for general-category women and Rs 1,700 for SC/ST beneficiaries from February.
  • - A new ‘Banglar Yuva Sathi’ scheme promises Rs 1,500 per month to unemployed 21–40 year-olds for up to five years, slated to start on August 15 subject to the TMC returning to power, with Rs 5,000 crore earmarked.
  • - Government staff will receive a 4% DA hike from April 1, and monthly honoraria rise by Rs 1,000 for ASHA and Anganwadi workers as well as civic volunteers, village police and green police, with gig workers added to state social security.
  • - The BJP labeled the interim budget appeasement and called key promises “false” or legally unimplementable once the Model Code of Conduct is in force, also attacking a roughly Rs 5,700 crore allocation for minority affairs.
  • - The state moves follow a Union Budget that prioritised medium-term, capex-led growth with Rs 12.2 lakh crore for infrastructure and extended tech incentives, drawing praise from some CMs and sharp objections from southern leaders over devolution formulas.
