West Bengal Woman Dies by Suicide After Voter Status Marked 'Under Adjudication'

The case has intensified scrutiny of a large electoral-roll review that placed more than 60 lakh voters under adjudication.

Overview

  • Police identified the deceased as 50-year-old Reena Rani Kundu of Paschim Chandipur in Baduria, North 24 Parganas.
  • Family members said her name appeared as “under consideration” in the post-SIR roll and the names of her sons, Shubhadip and Soumen, were missing.
  • Investigators said she allegedly hanged herself at home on Monday afternoon while her sons were at the Block Development Officer’s office to clarify their voter status.
  • Police sent the body for a post-mortem examination and opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death.
  • The Election Commission’s February 28 roll placed over 60 lakh electors under adjudication for review by judicial officers, a process residents say is causing anxiety, with the Trinamool Congress alleging numerous anxiety-related deaths.
