Overview
- A memorandum of understanding between West Bengal Police and Rashtriya Raksha University was signed at Nabanna on Wednesday to formalise a state–university partnership for police modernisation.
- The agreement tasks RRU, an institution under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, with delivering specialist courses and technical support in areas such as cybercrime, AI, dark-web investigations and forensic science.
- The state announced plans to induct about 16,000 constables who have completed training and to fill vacant police posts, measures framed by the government as steps to restore officer safety after recent attacks.
- Officials said the government will roll out the 112 Emergency Response Support System across police stations and launch new training and academic programmes, but they did not publish firm timelines, budgets or detailed operational plans.
- The administration cited earlier inaction on an RRU proposal first raised in November 2025 and pointed to similar RRU tie-ups in other states as precedent for the planned capacity-building drive.
