Overview

  • Police and investigation teams carried out coordinated raids this week that led to arrests of several Trinamool Congress figures, including KMC councillor Biswajit Mondal and former MLA Tilak Chakraborty.
  • The National Investigation Agency arrested former MLA Saokat Molla in the probe of the March 19 Bhangar blast, which killed one person and alleged bomb-making activity.
  • TMC vice-president Jayprakash Majumdar was taken to a disputed Salt Lake flat during the probe and was jeered and pelted with eggs by residents who accused him of illegally occupying the property.
  • Officers say the recent push followed formal instructions to dig up old or improperly handled complaints, and cases now being pursued include alleged extortion, offences against women and a reported Rs 34 crore diversion of PDS rice in Birbhum.
  • Some suspects remain at large, such as KMC councillor Susanta Kumar Ghosh who evaded a raid, and the enforcement drive is deepening political strain inside the TMC as probes and FIRs continue.
