Werribee Zoo Says Two Lion Cubs Are Thriving After Difficult Birth

The cubs remain in a private den to strengthen maternal care.

Overview

  • Zoo staff report the pair are healthy and active, with growing curiosity, play-fights and long naps.
  • Veterinarians performed a caesarean during the birth after prolonged labour to protect the mother and cubs.
  • Six were delivered, four died soon after, leaving two now with their mother out of public view.
  • The surviving pair were born to eight-year-old lioness Asali and father Sheru at Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria.
  • The zoo will introduce them to the pride of eight lions once older, a step used to reduce stress and support welfare.
