WeRide and Uber to Launch Spain’s First Robotaxi Pilot in Madrid

A phased rollout will begin with trained on-board operators, with fully driverless service pending performance milestones plus regulatory approval.

Overview

  • WeRide, Uber and AVOMO announced Tuesday that they will run Spain’s first commercial Robotaxi pilot in the Region of Madrid and will let riders book trips through the Uber app.
  • The service will start with trained vehicle operators on board and is planned to scale to fully driverless operation only after safety and performance milestones are met and regulators sign off.
  • AVOMO, part of Moove Cars Group, will supply and operate the local fleet under WeRide’s asset-light model, drawing on its experience running AV fleets in Austin and Atlanta.
  • WeRide will power the service with its WeRide One autonomous platform and GENESIS simulation tools, building on the company’s fully driverless operations already running in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
  • Partners said they aim to add hundreds of Robotaxis as the pilot proves safe, forming Madrid as the fourth city in a 15-city expansion plan toward tens of thousands of vehicles by 2030 and testing how AVs change city rides, regulation and fleet jobs.
