Weezer Releases The Gold Album, Their 20th LP

The band returned to an in-person, low-tech recording approach that produced a guitar-forward, garage-tinged record and launches a North American tour.

Overview

  • Weezer issued their self-titled 20th studio album, known as The Gold Album, on Friday and made the 10-track record available to stream, including singles “Shine Again” and “We Might As Well Be Strangers.”
  • Producers Klas Ahlund and Kenneth Blume (Kenny Beats) are credited on the album, which the band said was written and tracked together in a rehearsal/living-room setting in Orange County to emphasize a human, collaborative process.
  • Early reviews have been broadly positive, with critics praising a return to classic Weezer songwriting paired with thicker, bottom-heavy, garage-rock guitars and calling the record one of the band’s stronger recent efforts.
  • The song “We Might As Well Be Strangers” features Karly Hartzman of Wednesday, and Weezer previewed new material with a live TV performance of a single on NBC’s Tonight Show before the album’s release.
  • Weezer will support The Gold Album with the Weezer: The Gathering North American tour starting in September, a move that aims to highlight the record’s live-rock energy and reconnect longtime fans with the band’s era-based aesthetic.
