Weekend Guide: Arts, Markets, Marathon and Hyperloop Demos in Groningen and Drenthe

A busy regional program supports summer tourism with gallery shows, family activities and a public Hyperloop demonstration in Veendam.

Overview

  • Regional broadcasters list a wide range of events for the weekend of 18–19 July, covering gallery exhibitions, open-air festivals, markets, guided nature walks and children’s programs across Groningen and Drenthe.
  • Galerie Forma Aktua in Groningen has been transformed into a large summer salon with work by about sixty exhibitors and is open on weekends through 16 August for visitors.
  • The European Hyperloop Week brings more than twenty international student teams to the European Hyperloop Center in Veendam this weekend with a public demonstration day where Delft’s student team will show a working freight prototype.
  • The 26th Midzomer Marathon runs in the Drents-Friese Wold with same-day registration at Het Kasteel in Diever and options of 10.5 km, 20.1 km, 31.6 km and a full 42.2 km race for runners and spectators.
  • Many family activities require advance sign-up or small fees: Orvelte’s free summer market returns on Sunday and the following three Sundays, and at Boomkroonpad children can dissect owl pellets for €1 with proceeds to the Beilen animal shelter.
