Waymo to Launch Driverless, All‑Electric Robotaxis in Singapore by 2028

  • Waymo announced on Sept. 18 that it plans to begin offering fully autonomous, all‑electric ride‑hailing in Singapore by 2028 as its first entry into Southeast Asia.
  • The company says an initial fleet of Jaguar I‑PACE vehicles will arrive in the coming months and will be used for a 2027 readiness program of mapping and manual driving with trained local autonomous specialists.
  • Waymo must secure safety clearance from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority and the Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research before it can accept passengers, and it is working with the Ministry of Transport to satisfy those rules.
  • The company is pitching the service around safety gains, 24/7 preparation to adapt to local road geometry and monsoon weather, and plans to hire local operational, maintenance, and customer‑support staff.
  • The Singapore rollout follows Waymo’s planned Tokyo launch in 2027 and fits a wider push into London and Munich, placing the company in direct competition with local and Chinese AV operators already testing in the city‑state.
