WA’s AI Road Cameras Issue 31,800 Fines in First Month, Raising $13 Million

Officials say the high-angle mobile units are a road-safety tool to deter distracted driving.

Overview

  • Infringements between October 8 and November 8 totaled more than 31,800, led by 12,288 for mobile phone use, 10,285 for seatbelt breaches and 9,282 for speeding.
  • Images released by authorities show drivers using laptops and phones, eating with no hands on the wheel, and a passenger cradling an unrestrained baby.
  • Revenue of about $13 million from the first month is being directed to Western Australia’s Road Trauma Trust Account for safety projects.
  • Police Minister Reece Whitby said an earlier education campaign cut the monthly detected offences from roughly 47,500 to about 31,000.
  • Ministers warn enforcement will continue with fines and demerit points as WA confronts a high road toll this year.
