Overview
- Thousands of Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) supporters marched from Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali demanding the release of MP Amritpal Singh and other Sikh detainees, which culminated in a confrontation at the Mohali–Chandigarh border on Wednesday.
- Police used water cannons and erected barricades to stop the marchers but protesters forced their way through cordons, climbed on a water cannon vehicle and redirected or damaged its nozzle during the clash.
- Chandigarh Police reported multiple officers injured, detained some protesters, and registered FIRs that name leader Manpreet Singh Ayali and 14 others on charges including assault on public servants and disobedience of lawful orders.
- The protesters handed a memorandum to a joint principal secretary demanding Amritpal’s transfer from Dibrugarh jail to Punjab and the release of ‘‘Bandi Singhs,’’ prisoners from the 1990s insurgency whom activists say remain detained after serving sentences.
- The incident disrupted peak-hour traffic, affected commuters and schoolchildren, raised questions about security planning near the CM and governor residences, and could prompt further protests and legal actions as court and administrative steps continue.
