WarioWare Director Goro Abe Leaves Nintendo for Professorship, Plans Experimental Game Work

The 27-year Nintendo veteran will join Osaka Electro-Communication University’s new Game and Social Design program.

Overview

  • Abe confirmed on X that he resigned from Nintendo at the end of February and will start his university role in April.
  • He said the move takes him out of commercial game development, yet he intends to keep creating small, unconventional games through research and industry–academia projects.
  • In his new position, he plans to pursue game-related research and production within the university’s Game and Social Design initiative.
  • Abe directed or co-directed every major WarioWare entry since the original, most recently leading 2023’s WarioWare: Move It! on Switch.
  • His exit follows recent retirements of senior Nintendo figures such as Hideki Konno and Kensuke Tanabe, reflecting broader turnover among veteran creators.
