Walmart Promises Not to Use Customer Data for Personalized Pricing

The pledge seeks to rebuild shopper trust in response to recent FTC warnings about data-driven pricing.

Overview

  • Citing a company statement published Friday, CEO John Furner pledged that Walmart will not set different prices based on a shopper’s income, history, urgency, or time of day.
  • Furner extended the promise to Sparky, Walmart’s AI shopping assistant, saying the tool will not hide lower-priced options or raise prices for individual customers.
  • Walmart reported in March that 2,300 U.S. stores already use electronic shelf labels and said it expects the system to be in all stores within about a year to improve shelf-to-checkout price accuracy and save associate time.
  • The Federal Trade Commission issued a bulletin warning that personalized pricing can break consumer-protection rules and has asked companies to disclose how they use personal data to set prices, keeping regulatory pressure on retailers.
  • Shoppers, consumer groups and lawmakers remain skeptical, so Walmart says it will keep human oversight of pricing, offer transparency controls for customers and monitor its technology against the company’s commitments.
