Walking and Cycling Replace Up to 510,000 Daily Car Trips in Dublin, NTA Index Finds

The report underscores sizable health and economic returns that officials say justify continued investment.

Overview

  • The 2025 Walking and Cycling Index estimates up to 660,000 cars are removed each day across the Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick/Shannon and Waterford metropolitan areas.
  • In Dublin, adults cycling five or more days a week rose to 12% from 8% since 2023 even as the share of residents who cycle slipped to 34% from 36%.
  • Daily return trips cycled by people who would otherwise drive fell to about 66,000 from 71,000, and walking/wheeling car‑replacement trips dipped by 20,000 since 2023.
  • Safety remains the top barrier, with 59% feeling local cycling is safe versus 87% for walking/wheeling, though 66% want more walking/wheeling investment and 55% want more cycling investment.
  • The NTA cites more than €580m allocated for Dublin active‑travel works since 2022 and 1,077km delivered nationally since 2020, as a Fine Gael TD urges a Comptroller and Auditor General audit to test value for money.
