WA Heatwave Drives Extreme Fire Risk While East Faces Severe Thunderstorms

Perth is forecast to near 40C on Sunday under a Bureau heatwave warning as dry lightning and strong winds heighten the chance of new fires.

Overview

  • Perth is expected to reach about 39–40C on Sunday with warm nights not dropping below roughly 24C until early next week under an active heatwave warning.
  • Total fire bans and extreme fire danger are in place for inland WA districts including Yarra Yarra, Karroun, Lockwood, Mortlock and Avon, with most of the state at high risk on Sunday.
  • Meteorologists caution that a combination of heat, gusty winds and thunderstorms with little rainfall could produce dry-lightning ignitions through at least Tuesday.
  • A separate system is set to deliver severe thunderstorms with large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain across inland New South Wales and northern and northeastern Victoria, with storms also affecting parts of Tasmania.
  • An evacuation alert north of Geraldton was downgraded near Bowes, Howatharra and Oakajee, and Tasmania faces extreme fire danger over the Furneaux Islands as elevated risks persist in parts of NSW and one SA region.
