VW to End Dresden Car Production in 2025, Convert Gläserne Manufaktur Into Tech Campus

A letter of intent with regional partners outlines a research pivot featuring more than €50 million in funding alongside job guarantees through 2030.

Overview

  • The final ID.3 is due off the line this month, with the assembly line to be dismantled from January 2026, first TU Dresden research projects starting mid‑2026, and regular campus operations targeted for 2027.
  • Volkswagen, the Free State of Saxony and TU Dresden plan to invest over €50 million in areas such as AI, robotics, microelectronics and chip design, with TU Dresden expected to use roughly half the facility and four endowed professorships planned.
  • VW says there will be no compulsory redundancies at the site, employees have a job guarantee to 2030, and transfers are offered to Zwickau or Chemnitz as well as to Wolfsburg with a €30,000 premium.
  • About 50 to 60 employees still lack defined future roles, and IG Metall is pressing for clear assignments and concrete details on the transition.
  • The agreement remains a non‑binding letter of intent, key financial and leasing terms are still being finalized, and the city notes a possible zoning change may be required with no formal application yet filed.
