VW Halts U.S. ID.4 Production as EV Strategies Shift

Demand swings push carmakers toward lower-cost EVs.

Overview

  • Volkswagen, which said Thursday it will stop building the ID.4 in Chattanooga this month, will shift the line to higher‑volume Atlas SUVs and keep U.S. sales going from inventory that it expects to last into 2027.
  • VW cited a tougher U.S. market for electric cars after the $7,500 federal tax credit ended, and the company said plant staff will move to Atlas work rather than face layoffs.
  • Reuters-based reports say Tesla is developing a smaller, cheaper compact SUV in early stages with a China-first build, using a single motor and a smaller battery, and the company has not confirmed the project.
  • Cupra’s Raval will open VW Group’s small-EV push this summer at about €26,000, with VW and Skoda sister models due later in 2026 on a shared platform designed to cut costs.
  • Germany’s March tally showed 70,663 new battery-electric registrations, up 66.2%, with the Tesla Model Y leading at 6,841, while Porsche’s Q1 deliveries fell 15% as it readies an all-electric Cayenne for summer.
