VW Dominates Germany’s EV Market as Group BEVs Surge, Mercedes Sales Slide

Heavy competition in China plus higher U.S. tariffs left VW’s 2025 total slightly down despite strong European BEV gains.

Overview

  • Germany registered 545,142 new battery‑electric cars in 2025 for a 19.1% share, with VW’s ID.7, ID.3 and ID.4/5 leading the KBA rankings as Tesla’s Model Y fell out of the top ten.
  • Volkswagen Group delivered about 8.98–8.99 million vehicles worldwide in 2025, down 0.5% year over year, as China fell 8% to 2.69 million and North America dropped 10.4% to 946,800, while Europe rose 3.8% to 3.38 million.
  • Group BEV deliveries climbed 32% to 983,100 in 2025, led by a 66% jump in Europe, lifting pure EVs to roughly 11% of the group’s global mix.
  • Mercedes‑Benz reported about 2.16 million cars and vans sold in 2025 (−10%), including 1.8 million cars (−9%) and 168,800 BEVs (−9%), with the company citing strong late‑year demand for the new electric CLA.
  • SUVs gained ground in Germany with roughly one third of new registrations, or 44.2% when combined with off‑roaders, as the compact segment contracted and Chinese brands recorded triple‑ to quadruple‑digit growth from low bases.
