Overview
- The Voice of the People's Party staged a major march to the Meghalaya Secretariat on Thursday that drew thousands but fell short of the party's projection of over 100,000 participants.
- The VPP delivered a public ten-point demand list that calls for implementation of the Lum Pongdeng project, a White Paper, independent reviews of DSC and MPSC recruitments, legal safeguards for indigenous residents, and migration regulation.
- The party also pressed for restoration of street vendors' rights, formal recognition of traditional village heads, stricter controls on coke and cement plants, river protection, and action against illegal coal mining and related syndicates.
- Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the Assembly is the proper forum and that the government is open to discussion, while VPP leaders said the march was forced by repeated inaction and chose not to submit a fresh memorandum after the rally.
- Organisers suffered visible messaging problems during the protest, including an on-stage slogan gaffe by VPP leader Powell Sohkhlet, and the party plans to carry the protest agenda into the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly session scheduled for August 24–28 where it will press these issues in formal debate and questions.
