Overview
- Volvo announced Tuesday that from Q4 2026 drivers in 29 European countries will be able to initiate and pay for charging at more than 20,000 Tesla Supercharger stations using the Volvo Cars smartphone app.
- All current Volvo battery-electric models sold in Europe — EX30, EX40, EC40, EX60, EX90 and ES90 — will be compatible because they use the native CCS2 connector, while plug-in hybrids are excluded because they have Type 2 ports for AC charging only.
- Volvo did not confirm whether in‑car navigation will show real-time Supercharger availability or whether Plug & Charge (automatic authentication and billing at the charger) will be enabled at launch, leaving key UX details unspecified.
- The company said it will transition selected models in Japan and South Korea to the North American Charging System (NACS) by 2029 under the SAE J3400 approach, signalling a broader regional shift in connector standards.
- The move follows Volvo’s earlier North American integration and Polestar’s app-based rollout, and it should make public fast charging simpler for owners by removing the need to use Tesla’s app and centralising billing in Volvo’s ecosystem.
