Overview
- Keswick Mountain Rescue cut short a training night to search for two young men lost near Calf Cove below Great End, then found them near Seathwaite and stood down around 11:05 p.m. after about three hours.
- The previous night, Wasdale Mountain Rescue spent more than eight hours on Scafell Pike before two stranded walkers warmed up and were escorted off the hill by 6:40 a.m.
- A coastguard helicopter turned back when rain, strong winds, poor visibility and a wind chill near minus two degrees made flying unsafe, so teams pressed on by foot.
- Patchy phone signal blocked direct contact with the walkers, so rescuers used a 999 location ping and a position relayed by a parent to guide search routes.
- Wasdale said the Scafell Pike pair were inadequately prepared, and Keswick warned of more late, ill‑equipped starts linked to social media, urging walkers to check forecasts and carry lights and navigation gear.
