Volkswagen Launches Tiguan and Tayron eHybrid in Australia

The new plug‑in models offer long WLTP electric ranges in exchange for lost all‑wheel drive and reduced cargo and towing capacity.

Overview

  • Both Tiguan and Tayron eHybrid use the same 19.7 kWh high‑voltage battery and a 1.5‑litre turbo petrol engine, and Volkswagen has configured both as front‑wheel‑drive only to fit the battery.
  • Volkswagen cites WLTP electric ranges of about 113–117 km and very low combined fuel figures, but Drive’s first drives found those numbers depend on regular charging and rose when the battery ran flat.
  • Packaging for the battery forces clear trade‑offs: the Tiguan’s boot drops from 652L to 490L and towing limits fall, while the Tayron loses its third row to accommodate the pack.
  • The eHybrids come heavily specified with items like adaptive suspension, heated and massaging front seats, large digital displays and vehicle‑to‑load capability, and launch drive‑away pricing is offered through 30 June 2026.
  • Buyers should weigh ownership costs and limits: Volkswagen provides a five‑year vehicle warranty and an eight‑year/160,000 km battery warranty, servicing is on 12‑month or 15,000 km intervals with an optional five‑year Care Plan, and petrol‑only performance is noticeably subdued when the battery is depleted.
