Volkswagen Group Recalls 94,000 EVs After KBA Flags Battery Module Defect

Regulators say some high‑voltage battery modules fall short of spec, creating a potential fire hazard.

Overview

  • Volkswagen Group will recall 94,031 MEB‑platform electric cars worldwide on Tuesday after Germany’s KBA identified faulty battery modules in models including the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz and ID.Buzz Cargo, plus the Cupra Born.
  • KBA says individual modules inside the high‑voltage pack may not meet specification, which can reduce driving range and trigger a yellow warning light, and the authority warns there is a risk of fire, with no injuries or property damage reported so far.
  • Volkswagen’s fix adds a battery‑management software update to spot irregular cell behavior, followed by dealer inspections of the pack and replacement of any modules that deviate from spec.
  • The affected vehicles were built between February 7, 2022 and August 23, 2024, and the scope shows gaps that remain unexplained, such as different date ranges for the ID.3 and Cupra Born and the absence of Audi Q4 e‑tron models built on related lines.
  • The move follows separate U.S. recalls earlier in 2026 for ID.4s with SK On cells tied to misaligned electrodes, which led to a park‑outside advisory and a Self Discharge Detection software update, but regulators have not confirmed whether Europe’s cases share the same root cause.
