Volkswagen Delays Electric Golf Beyond 2028

The brand is holding back the next Golf to prove its new EV platform in premium models first.

Overview

  • Volkswagen, which on Wednesday confirmed the electric Golf will not arrive in 2028, gave no new date for launch.
  • Brand chief Thomas Schäfer said the car will follow the Group’s Scalable Systems Platform rollout that starts with Audi and then Porsche before reaching Volkswagen.
  • The SSP underpins a shift to 800‑volt hardware and new zonal software co‑developed with Rivian, which Volkswagen says must reach scale to hit EV–ICE margin parity.
  • Schäfer called the timing a tactical move as newer “True Volkswagen” models fill the gap this year, including the ID. Polo, the refreshed ID.3 Neo, and the ID. Cross small SUV.
  • Volkswagen plans to build the future Golf EV in Wolfsburg, while production of the current combustion Golf moves to Mexico in mid‑2027, and several outlets now project the EV could slip to around 2030 or later.
