Virginia Beach Council Votes Thursday on 9 p.m. Oceanfront Curfew for All Ages

Officials say the measure would address crowd violence following a weekend shooting that injured eight.

Overview

  • Virginia Beach City Council, which set a special session for 4 p.m. Thursday, is considering a 9 p.m. curfew on the remaining Fridays and Saturdays in April for the Oceanfront.
  • The proposed zone would run from Rudee Loop to 31st Street between the Boardwalk and Pacific Avenue, with carve-outs for hotel guests, restaurant patrons, workers, emergencies and permitted events.
  • Police say a second suspect, Isaiah Charity of Richmond, surrendered Monday after city cameras captured at least three shooters, and court papers note some victims were bystanders.
  • The plan follows a 7 p.m.–5 a.m. curfew for minors already in place and extra officers assigned to the Oceanfront since early March, which the police chief called unusual for this time of year.
  • Shop owners near the beach warn an early cutoff could thin evening crowds and hurt sales, while city leaders also back a state bill to create temporary “pop-up event zones” after it was shelved this year.
