Overview
- A mass crash about 5–5.5 km from the stage 5 finish in Pau involved Jonas Vingegaard and several other riders and forced him off his own bike.
- Vingegaard quickly took the bike of teammate Victor Campenaerts and Visma riders mounted a concerted chase to rejoin the main peloton so he recorded no time loss.
- Team sport director Marc Reef reported no injury and said Vingegaard feels strong and ready for the decisive Pyrenees stage that includes the Col d'Aspin and Col du Tourmalet.
- Vingegaard finished the stage 53rd and, like principal rival Tadej Pogacar, crossed the line 14 seconds behind sprint winner Olav Kooij while remaining 7:53 behind GC leader Torstein Træen.
- The Pyrenean stage with the long Tourmalet climb and a new finish into Gavarnie-Gèdre is expected to be the first major test for overall contenders and could reshuffle the general classification.
