Vincent Smith Sentenced to Seven Years in Bosasa Corruption Case

The government hailed the plea-based conviction as evidence of follow-through on the Zondo Commission’s anti-corruption agenda.

Overview

  • Johannesburg High Court accepted a Section 105A plea and sentence agreement on 5 March, finalizing the case against the former ANC MP.
  • Smith pleaded guilty to contravening PRECCA, fraud, money laundering and tax offences linked to Bosasa-linked kickbacks.
  • The court imposed 12 years on each count with five years suspended per count, resulting in seven years of direct imprisonment, according to the IDAC.
  • Prosecutors said he failed to declare Bosasa gratification to Parliament and did not disclose about R28 million in Euroblitz 48 taxable income from 2009 to 2018.
  • Charges against Euroblitz 48 were withdrawn as the NPA and the Presidency welcomed the outcome as a concrete step in State Capture accountability.
