Overview
- On May 31 three Konsakhul villagers went to fix a deliberately cut water pipeline and unidentified armed men opened fire, injuring 23-year-old Kachiaklungbou Chawang who was evacuated to RIMS for treatment.
- The Konsakhul village authority and the Foothills Naga Coordination Committee allege the attack followed the cutting of the line and name cadres of the Kuki National Front (P) and men from Leilon Vaiphei as responsible.
- The incident compounds an ongoing hostage dispute in which 18 Naga civilians were taken in May, 12 have been released and six remain unaccounted for, prompting Nagaland and Meghalaya chief ministers to press Union Home Minister Amit Shah for urgent action.
- A planned release of 14 Kuki detainees on June 1 was called off after public protests and a United Naga Council announcement that the release 'stands cancelled' because of demands related to the six missing Nagas.
- Security forces have been deployed to the area, officials say investigations are under way and authorities are considering transfer of cases to central agencies as the disruption to water and movement raises the risk of further local escalation and civilian hardship.
