Viking Libra, First Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ship, Floats Out

The milestone signals a staged path to cleaner cruising under fuel and port limits.

Overview

  • Viking and Fincantieri floated out the 998-guest Viking Libra at Ancona, moving the ship into outfitting for a planned November 2026 debut in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
  • The ship will carry liquefied hydrogen to feed polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells that can deliver up to six megawatts for zero-emission running during parts of a voyage.
  • Viking says onboard hydrogen storage will not cover full routes, which positions the zero-emission mode to help the ship enter sensitive areas such as Norway’s fjords.
  • The float-out comes as cruise lines trial cleaner designs, including Havila’s LNG-and-battery ships with a December 2025 biogas voyage and Hurtigruten’s solar-sail and battery concept targeting around 2030.
  • Industry-wide adoption remains gradual because many ships are hard to retrofit, new builds take years, and supplies and bunkering for hydrogen and biogas are still limited at ports.
