Overview
- The Governor scheduled the swearing-in for Sunday at 10 a.m. at Chennai’s Nehru Stadium after Saturday’s letters from VCK and IUML confirmed outside support that lifted Vijay’s backing to about 120 MLAs.
- Friday night’s plan for a ceremony was halted when the Governor demanded written proof of numbers and asked the state DGP to trace a reportedly missing MLA following horse-trading allegations.
- TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, but Vijay’s double win reduces the party’s usable strength to 107, so Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML supplied the extra votes needed to clear the 118 majority mark.
- Supporting parties said they acted to avoid President’s Rule and to block any indirect role for the BJP as the assembly’s previous term ends May 10, which made a swift handover urgent.
- The shift ends the state’s decades-long DMK–AIADMK duopoly and brings a debutant party to power, with nine ministers also likely to be sworn in alongside Vijay.
