Vigo Police Seize 60 km/h Modified E‑Scooter in First Week of New Speed Checks

The roadside campaign uses a portable velocimeter to identify illegally tuned VMPs, with further checks planned across Vigo.

Overview

  • Officers stopped a 49-year-old rider near Praza do Rei on the Camelias bike lane and measured her scooter at 59.9 km/h, leading to impoundment and a €500 fine that can be halved with prompt payment.
  • The unit conducted about 40 tests over the past week before this first confirmed case under the new controls, and inspections will be deployed to additional locations.
  • Local rules cap VMP speed at 25 km/h generally and 10 km/h in the Casco Vello, with exceeding the limit by more than 50% classified as a very serious infraction punishable by up to €500.
  • Police are using a two-roller portable device to assess maximum speed on the spot, operated by the Sintra transport inspection unit.
  • Since January 2024 VMPs must be registered with the DGT and display an ID label, Vigo now has an authorized engraver for these tags, and about 80% of checked vehicles show compliance under the phased rollout.
