Vietnam Airlines 787 Overran Munich Runway After Very Late Rotation

Germany’s accident bureau will lead a probe to determine whether tail contact and tyre warnings point to a technical or procedural failure.

Overview

  • Flight VN34, which overshot the runway on Saturday, August 15, used nearly the full 4,000‑metre runway before lifting off about 120 metres beyond the paved end and throwing up a large dust cloud.
  • Crew warnings indicated the aircraft’s tail struck the ground and tyre‑pressure alerts activated shortly after takeoff, and video and photos show visible tail and fuselage damage.
  • The pilots climbed to about 9,000–10,000 feet and circled for roughly 90–120 minutes to dump or burn fuel, then made two low approaches so ground crews could inspect before completing an emergency landing.
  • After touchdown several tyres shredded, smoke was seen from the main landing gear, passengers were evacuated with no injuries, and the aircraft was towed off the runway and remains out of service.
  • Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation is leading the inquiry with Vietnam’s aviation authority cooperating, and investigators will review flight data, brake and landing‑gear systems, and takeoff performance calculations.
