Overview
- A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 (VN-A867) used almost the full length of Munich’s runway during takeoff and appears to have contacted the runway end, producing a visible dust plume and a tail strike.
- The crew declared an emergency and climbed to about 9,000–10,000 feet to burn or dump fuel, then flew two low approaches before landing back at Munich roughly two hours after departure.
- Photographs and videos posted online show multiple shredded main tires and severe tail-area damage, and airport staff report possible damage to runway lighting and equipment at the far end of the runway.
- The aircraft came to rest disabled on the runway, closing the runway for an extended period, and no injuries have been reported to passengers or crew.
- Authorities and Vietnam Airlines have not released formal findings and an official investigation is expected to focus on takeoff performance calculations, weight and balance, and possible technical issues.
