Victoria Sets Early-February Trials for Tap-and-Go Public Transport Payments

Almost 3,000 new readers are installed, with the rollout to start on trains then extend across the network.

Overview

  • Department of Transport and Planning staff will run a three-day closed-group laboratory test in early February using a range of bank cards and smart devices.
  • Limited public trials at selected train stations will follow the staff testing phase to gather passenger feedback.
  • A network-wide switch to contactless payments is targeted for early this year, beginning on trains before buses and trams, with no launch date confirmed.
  • Passengers will be able to pay using physical credit or debit cards and digital wallets on smartphones and smartwatches.
  • The change was mandated in Conduent’s 2023 myki contract but has faced delays and scrutiny, and myki remains the only contactless option until the new system is activated.
