Victoria Braces for Severe Storms as Mallee Faces Extreme Fire Danger

Emergency agencies urge residents to activate storm plans in the north-east, with a Total Fire Ban in the Mallee for extreme fire danger.

Overview

  • The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts severe thunderstorms from about 1pm with possible large hail, intense rainfall, and wind gusts greater than 90 km/h and up to 120 km/h.
  • Rainfall totals of 15 to 25 millimetres are expected in parts of the state, with up to 30 millimetres possible in some areas.
  • The State Control Centre warns communities including Mildura, Swan Hill, Euroa, Shepparton, Mansfield, Wangaratta, Corryong and Albury-Wodonga to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions.
  • An extreme fire-danger warning and a Total Fire Ban are in force for the Mallee until midnight, with high fire-danger ratings for the Northern and Wimmera districts and one out-of-control bushfire near Wyperfeld National Park not currently threatening homes.
  • Authorities advise having fire and storm plans, avoiding flooded roads and downed powerlines, and considering travel from isolated Mallee areas to larger towns on extreme fire days.
