Veteran JD(U) Leader K.C. Tyagi Joins RLD in Delhi

Tyagi casts the switch as a return to Lok Dal tradition with a focus on building RLD’s base in western Uttar Pradesh.

Overview

  • Tyagi formally entered the Rashtriya Lok Dal on March 22 in New Delhi in the presence of party chief and Union minister Jayant Chaudhary, who publicly welcomed him.
  • He had signalled his exit from JD(U) by not renewing his membership on March 17 after a two-decade association that included roles as national general secretary, chief spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP.
  • Describing ideological continuity, Tyagi cited the legacy of Chaudhary Charan Singh, Ram Manohar Lohia and Karpoori Thakur, and said he joined not to seek office.
  • He said he will focus on strengthening the RLD in western Uttar Pradesh to bolster the National Democratic Alliance’s prospects in the 2027 state elections, adding he will not contest those polls.
  • RLD has not announced a formal post for him, other leaders such as former UP minister Ashok Yadav also joined at the event, and Tyagi said his relationship with Nitish Kumar remains unchanged while denying any bid for a Rajya Sabha seat.
