Overview
- The University of Vermont appointed former Holy Cross coach Maureen Magarity to lead its women’s basketball team, marking the first time in Division I that a married couple runs one school’s men’s and women’s programs.
- Magarity is married to John Becker, who has coached Vermont’s men’s team since 2011 and guided it to six NCAA Tournament appearances.
- The vacancy followed a rapid coaching chain in which Virginia dismissed Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, Richmond’s Aaron Roussell moved to Virginia, and Vermont’s Alisa Kresge accepted the Richmond job.
- Magarity compiled a 72–41 record at Holy Cross with Patriot League tournament titles and NCAA automatic bids in 2023 and 2024 before stepping away for family reasons and relocating to Burlington.
- Athletic director Jeff Schulman had named associate head coach Sacha Santimano interim during the transition, and Magarity said in the school’s release she is honored and will work to maintain the program’s standards.
