Vermila Studios Lays Off 19 Staff as Closure Looms

The Madrid developer says financial strain forced a formal redundancy process and warns a full shutdown is a feasible possibility.

Overview

  • Vermila’s CEO David Carrasco confirmed in a statement that the company let go of 19 employees for financial reasons and said the studio will try to stay open but a full closure is a feasible possibility.
  • Several former staff and a game designer posted on social media that an Expediente de Regulación de Empleo (ERE) led to the departure of the entire team and that the studio has effectively closed, creating a partly conflicting public picture.
  • The ERE is a formal Spanish legal process companies use to lay off workers or suspend contracts and was the mechanism Vermila used to execute the reductions.
  • Vermila released Crisol: Theater of Idols on February 10, 2026, with Blumhouse Games as publisher, and the title earned generally positive reviews (Metacritic ~74) but did not prevent the studio’s post-launch financial distress.
  • Founded in 2020 and briefly owned by Embracer Group, Vermila split from Embracer during 2023 restructuring, and the current layoffs leave former employees seeking new roles while raising questions about the financial sustainability of small independent studios that rely on single-title performance.
