Verizon Raises Unlimited Ultimate Price and Rolls Out Online-Only Sweeteners

The carrier is testing a mix of higher rates and targeted credits to lift revenue per line without driving more customers to leave.

Overview

  • Verizon's Unlimited Ultimate plan, increased by $5 for new sign-ups on May 7, keeps existing subscribers at their current rate under a three-year price lock.
  • The refreshed plan bundles Identity Secure and Verizon Family Plus, which the company values at about $15 a month in added features for the $5 bump.
  • To soften the change, Verizon is waiving its $40 activation fee for lines added online on its three Unlimited plans, with the charge shown at checkout and reimbursed as a one-time bill credit within one or two billing cycles.
  • New-phone buyers who add a line online can claim a $100 Verizon e-gift card, which requires redemption within 60 days and arrives by email in about eight weeks.
  • The offers come as Verizon tries to curb rising churn, after CEO Dan Schulman cited a 25-basis-point increase over three years and moved away from free-line promos, with surveys showing its customers carry some of the highest monthly bills and many are considering a switch.
