Venus and Jupiter Form Bright Double Evening Star Over Western Sky

This apparent alignment offers an easy naked-eye show that highlights Venus's greater brightness because it is closer to Earth and has highly reflective clouds.

Overview

  • The two planets reach their closest apparent separation of about 1.6 degrees on 9 June, appearing low in the western sky roughly 45–90 minutes after sunset.
  • Observers with a clear western horizon can see the pairing with the naked eye and may use binoculars to fit both planets in one field and to spot Jupiter's four large Galilean moons.
  • Mercury may join the view as a faint third member near the same area of sky for a brief window but will become hard to see without optical aid after 10 June.
  • The match is a line-of-sight conjunction so the planets remain far apart in space; Venus looks brighter because it is much closer to Earth now and its thick cloud cover reflects sunlight efficiently.
