Venice Mayor Proposes Day-Entry Ticket Up to €50

The plan targets short, high-footfall visits as a way to cut crowding but it must win approval from the national government before it can be applied.

Overview

  • On June 19 mayor Simone Venturini formally proposed raising the day-entry contribution to as much as €50 on selected days and said he had discussed the idea with President Sergio Mattarella on June 17.
  • The current experimental system charges €5 for advance bookings and €10 for bookings made within four days and covers only day visitors between 8:30 and 16:00 with exemptions for overnight guests, Veneto residents, children under 14 and other categories.
  • City data for the first 42 days of 2026 show about 268,000 €10 tickets sold versus about 245,000 €5 tickets, a gap municipal officials say is too small to change visitor behavior substantially.
  • In 2025 the municipality collected €5.4 million from the ticket but spent nearly €3 million on management and staff while nonpayment carries fines of €50–€300 and enforcement has been stepped up this year.
  • Because a prior national law defined cost limits, any large increase would require talks with Rome and a formal meeting between Venice and the central government to settle legal and practical details.
