Overview
- Reporters observed city crews cleaning the corner of Rose Avenue and Hampton Drive and conducting outreach as several people relocated nearby and said they planned to return once crews left.
- Councilwoman Traci Park’s office said two existing 41.18 zones curbed large-scale repopulation but a gap between them allowed a small group to come back, and the office said it is working to close that gap.
- Mayor Karen Bass’ office called the location highly attractive for encampments and said the administration will continue clearing efforts, stating it will not be deterred.
- Residents and nearby businesses described ongoing drug use, harassment, vandalism and burglaries, and the operator of The Rose Venice said the vacant site has been repeatedly damaged but remains slated for eventual reopening.
- The site was cleared in 2023 as the city’s second Inside Safe operation with Bass and Park present, when more than 90 people were housed, and both officials are now campaigning for re-election as the area sees renewed occupation.
