Vassili Golod Named New Host and Editor of ARD’s Monitor

WDR says the 33-year-old Ukraine correspondent will lead a generational and digital renewal of the six-decade-old program while Achim Pollmeier runs the show provisionally until spring 2027.

  • WDR announced on Wednesday that Vassili Golod will succeed long-time host Georg Restle as moderator and head of the political magazine Monitor, with Golod taking up the post in spring 2027.
  • Until Golod begins, longtime deputy Achim Pollmeier will serve as interim leader and moderator and keep the program on air under the current editorial team.
  • Golod will step down as head of the ARD studio in Kyiv, where he reported from Ukraine since 2022 and built the new studio from 2023, work that earned him industry awards including a German Television Prize.
  • Restle left Monitor in March after 14 years and moved to lead the ARD studio in Nairobi in June, and his public criticism of ARD’s handling of the AfD has shaped coverage of the succession.
