Vasile Frumuzache’s Escape Bid Foiled at Florence Prison on Eve of Trial

Union leaders praised the lone patrol officer, raising questions about the prison’s safeguards before the first court session.

Overview

  • Frumuzache attempted to flee Sollicciano around 10 a.m. during exercise time, using knotted bedsheets to scale internal walls, according to the prison officers’ union Osapp.
  • A single perimeter patrol officer spotted and stopped him within the inner enclosure, and officers found a knife on him before returning him to his cell.
  • The 32-year-old has confessed to killing Maria Denisa Paun and Ana Maria Andrei and is charged with voluntary homicide and concealment of bodies, with a first hearing set for 5 February before the Florence Corte d’Assise.
  • Osapp and the Sappe union commended the officer’s intervention and criticized Sollicciano’s security, with Osapp calling the facility a “groviera” and urging stronger staffing and infrastructure.
  • He was moved to Sollicciano in June 2025 after being attacked in the Prato prison by an inmate reportedly related to one of the victims.
