Varfolomeev Wins European All-Around as Russian and Belarusian Gymnasts Return

Her Varna victory could reshape team start places for the Frankfurt world championships because the meet introduced an all-around cut after two apparatus.

Overview

  • Olympic champion Darja Varfolomeev won the individual all-around title in Varna on Saturday despite feeling unwell and suffering a painful wisdom tooth, and she advanced to finals in three apparatus while missing the clubs final after mistakes in qualifying.
  • The championships are using a new all-around final format that reduces the field from 20 to the top 10 after the hoop and ball rotations so only those ten gymnasts continue with clubs and ribbon.
  • The international bodies FIG and UEG recently lifted sanctions so Russian and Belarusian gymnasts are competing under their national flags at the Varna event for the first time in years.
  • Performances in Varna carry direct consequences for teams because placement affects the allocation of start places at the home World Championships in Frankfurt in August, which Varfolomeev is treating as her season peak.
  • The European Championships run 27–31 May in Varna with 372 gymnasts from 43 countries and live streams of the all-around and apparatus finals available on SWR Sport and the ARD Mediathek.
